Jugjugg Jeeyo Review: Neetu Kapoor Shines in Raj Mehta’s Family Drama

The Indian audience cannot grow out of a healthy family drama. Look at films like Kapoor & Sons or Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (K3G) and you know that despite their share of problems, we only revisit these films because these are entertaining, family dramas that instantly connect with the audience. For a long time, despite the growth of OTT and the many new themes discussed in films, we lacked the perfect family drama featuring a generous dose of comedy. Needless to say, Jugjugg Jeeyo promised to be all that, and high hopes were immediately put on hold.

Now, coming off the stage after watching it, it’s safe to say the movie lives up to the hype it made. The story revolves around Kukkoo (Varun Dhawan) and Naina (Kiara Advani), childhood sweethearts whose marriage takes a turn for the worse and they decide to get a divorce. As they struggle to inform the Kukkoo family of their decision, Kukkoo experiences another shock as his father (Anil Kapoor) reveals his desire to divorce his mother (played by Neetu Kapoor).

In the midst of all this chaos, presented to us in a comedic fashion, one might begin to think that this is an all-encompassing comedy. But as was the case with director Raj Mehta, the second half opens the way for emotions and drama, and all problems are addressed rather than turning a blind eye to ‘mistakes’.

While the focus of the film is on addressing the issues, it is Raj’s unexpected narration that pushes you into the second half of the film. It makes you guess twice – will it go to a realistic end? Will it give us a happy ending? The problem with family drama is that everyone wants a great ending, otherwise part of the audience may feel resentful. Raj deals with expectations and reality with a large amount of sugar coating.

However, the star of the movie is definitely Neetu Kapoor. She’s a strong performer, and no matter how much you stay away from the camera, the talent is bound to show when she starts to roll. Emotional sequences are draped over her shoulder and anchored beautifully. From providing dialogue to showing the dilemma her character Geeta is going through, she’s great in every sequence. Indeed, her performance can move even the toughest of souls.

The cast, on the whole, is also good. Varun Dhawan plays the man caught between his failed relationship and the one who takes it upon himself to save his parents’ marriage. He has to deal with emotional turmoil while maintaining comedic timing in the first half, and he does so brilliantly. It is also made possible by the flawless performance of Anil Kapoor. He is effortless in his portrayal of Bheem, the man whose character is the main element of surprise in the film. It makes acting seem like a picnic.

Kiara Advani keeps up with her good performance once again, wearing the Naina shoes with ease. Her character has very fine detailing, and she pulls it off perfectly well with her talent. There’s Manish Paul, who plays her brother, and offers plenty of comic relief even in the toughest of sequences. It’s the sugar coat that Raj Mehta bestows on the audience to make difficult and more emotional sequences more palatable.

The background score often dictates the mood of the audience. Even in some sequences where one might want to get pissed off, the music is cleverly kept to a funny tone, which makes the audience take it lightly. Feelings reached their peak, and one would realize that the music was deliberately kept in this way to confuse audiences at that point.

The movie has problems. Some of the jokes look like old WhatsApp attackers, even though they may be laughable. But one might want to overlook that because Jugjugg Jeeyo provides wholesome entertainment.

Jugjugg Jeeyo will make you laugh, cry and join the characters on an emotional roller coaster. The movie is totally entertaining, paisa wasool, and you should definitely watch it.
