Bollywood shines at 56th National Awards ceremony

The 56th National Film Awards ceremony here Friday was high on the Bollywood quotient owing to the presence of celebrities like Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and Farhan Akhtar. President Pratibha Patil gave away the awards to the winners.

Bollywood bagged 13 awards at the ceremony.

Priyanka Chopra came in a white thread-work sari to receive the Best Actress award for her role in “Fashion”, Kangana walked up the podium in a black salwar-kameez to take the Best Supporting Actress award for the same film.

Arjun Rampal, who attended the award ceremony with his wife Mehr Jessia, looked suave in a black bandhgala suit when he received the award for Best Supporting Actor for “Rock On!”. Farhan Akhtar too was present at the event, where his debut movie as an actor was given the Best Film award.

Chinni Prakash and his wife Rekha Prakash received the Best Choreography award for the song “Azeem-o-shaan shehenshah” in Ashutosh Gowariker’s epic “Jodhaa Akbar”. The song depicts dance forms of different Indian states.

Fashion designer Neeta Lulla, wearing a plain green sari, received the Best Costume Designer award for styling actress Aishwarya Rai in “Jodhaa Akbar”.

Nandita Das’ directorial debut “Firaaq”, which was based on the 2002 Gujarat riots, won the awards for Best Editing for A. Sreekar Prasad and Best Art Direction for Gautam Sen.

Neeraj Pandey’s “A Wednesday” bagged the Indira Gandhi award for Best First Film of a director and Yash Raj Films’ “Roadside Romeo” bagged the Best Animation Film award.

Dibakar Banerjee’s satirical “Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!” was given the award for the best popular film providing wholesome entertainment, “Mumbai Meri Jaan” directed by Nishikant Kamat got the award for best special effects (“Govardhan“) and “Thanks Maa” has got Shams Patel the Best Child Artist award.

Marathi film “Jogva”, a poignant tale of one woman’s journey to break free from the shackles of discrimination, sexual oppression and servitude to find true happiness, bagged the maximum honours.

Its lead actor Upendra Limaya won the best actor award and the film was adjudged the best film on social issues. The movie also won two awards each for playback singers Shreya Ghoshal and Hariharan for the song “Jeev dangla gungla rangla”. Music composers Ajay and Atul also won the best music direction award for their songs for the film.

Annirudh Roy-Chowdhary’s Bengali project “Antaheen” got four awards, including for best feature film. The film, about love and loneliness, won awards for best cinematography and best lyrics, while Shreya Ghoshal won the award for best singer for the song “Pherari mon”. Shreya couldn’t attend the function and Roy—Chowdhary receieved it on her behalf.

Marathi film “Gandha” bagged two awards — best screenplay for Sachin Kundalkar and best audiography for Pramod J. Thomas.

The award for the best film on family values went to Sooni Taraporewallah’s English film “Little Zizou” that revolves around the Parsi community.

Kannada film “Gubbachigalu” got the best children’s film award.

The special jury honour was given to Malayalam film “Bioscope”, produced by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and directed by K.M. Madhusudhanan.

The award for best direction went to Bala for Tamil film “Naan Kadauul”.

The winners of best feature film in regional languages are “Mon Jei” (Assamese), “Shob Charitro Kalponik” (Bengali), “Vimukthi” (Kannada), “Thirakkatha” (Malayalam), “Harishchandrachi Factory” (Marathi), “Vaaranam Ayiram” (Tamil) and “1940 Lookagramam” (Telugu).

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni was present at the event, which was compered by actress Divya Dutta.

Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra is all set to debut on the small screen by replacing action star Akshay Kapoor to host this year’s Special IPL Edition of Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi.

The Special IPL Edition of Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi, will have 13 Indian and International cricketers competing with each other to win the show, TV channel Colors announced today.

“It feels fantastic to be associated with one of the biggest shows on Indian television today and it fits perfectly with my personality. I have been a huge fan of FF-KKK and thoroughly enjoy watching it,” said Priyanka Chopra, who made her Bollywood debut opposite Akshay in Andaaz.

“I am looking forward to begin an all new innings in TV with this show which pumps up the adrenaline levels. Its exciting to be a part of the concept which is unique and is associated with some of the biggest names in cricket,” she added.

“We are delighted to have Priyanka on-board to host this years Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi. When you combine her glamour, mass-appeal and athleticism with that of cricketers’ energy and adrenalin, what you get is the best possible combination for a show like Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi, said Ashvini Yardi, Programming Head of Colors.

“Akshay took this show to great heights with his inimitable style, however this year we’re changing the format. So, far you had seen 13 hasinaein with 1 khiladi… his season get ready to witness 13 cricketing khiladis and ek haseena,” she added.

Director of Lahore points out film with no biases

Pakistan has banned Bollywood’s latest offering Lahore, a film its disappointed director Sanjay Puran Chauhan describes as a “different and balanced project” that has no biases.

“Lahore is not a typical Bollywood commercial film. It’s not a Pakistan bashing film. It is a very different and balanced project with no negativity or biases against any country. We were very keen that it releases there (in Pakistan), but now we are disappointed,” Chauhan told IANS.

Set against the backdrop of competitive kickboxing, the movie that releases worldwide today shows how two countries torn apart by politics and religion bond in the sports arena. It aims to take a ringside view of India-Pakistan relations.

According to Chauhan, Pakistan-based producer and distributor Rashid Khawaja had told his producer Vivek Khatkar that he was keen to buy the rights of the movie. However, the Pakistan censor board objected to some dialogues and scenes and banned the release.

The director says he has not yet given a thought to tweaking the particular scenes to suit the tastes of the Pakistan censor board.

“We were told that the authorities aren’t pleased with certain portions of the movie. But every film has certain tones without which it will lose its essence.”

Lahore has been shot in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Lonavala, Malaysia and at Lahore.

The director was keen to shoot the film in Lahore but couldn’t do so because he was denied a visa. The producers then decided to hire foreign crew to shoot in Pakistan.

“We were kept on hold for a long time and they kept delaying the process. We got foreign crew, mostly from the Netherlands, and then we had to employ local crew. We could only take exterior shots as we were told by locals that shooting with Indian actors could create hassles,” said Chauhan, who coordinated with the crew through phone or internet.

Made under the banner Sai Om Films Pvt Ltd, “Lahore” has already traversed the festival circuit and won the jury award for best feature film at the 42nd World Fest International Film Festival, Houston, Texas, where the world premiere of the film was held April 20 last year.

It’s double celebration time for Kangna, for the pretty gal also turns a year older in a few days. When she joined Bollywood, she was all of 17, and was “immature.” At first, the crazy life of an actor dismayed her. “I used to think this is such torture – shooting for multiple hours and working for so long. At times, you’re supposed to begin your day at 5.30–6 am,” she says.

Then she thought there was discrimination too. “I would think ‘Why this break for that actor, and why this one for me?’” But things have changed today? “Of course. After spending a decent amount of time in the industry, one becomes more calculative and observant. Today, I feel that if I’ve chosen to do this kind of work, I better live up to it. I understand the business of filmmaking.”

What else has she observed all these years? “That despite the frenzied pace, one can have fun, lots of fun. Only that fun is unpredictable, you never know when you’re going to laugh – in the middle of shooting, or on the sets or elsewhere,” she says, adding, “I’ve also observed that the image of actors is very bad. People think all actors are dumb. Once I had a discussion with a director, after which he was surprised, and said, ‘Oh! You’re so intelligent.’ And I felt, perhaps, this is not the way they expect an actor to be.” And she has more to say, “Also, actresses are not expected to be involved in all those discussions and debates regarding script, shooting, dialogues, etc. And if an actress does, people are surprised. When I took interest in all of this, I was treated like a man. Usually, it’s only the men who are interested in the behind-the-scene specifics.” And when she was offered Rs 5 crore for Tanvir Khan’s movie, she felt like a man again? “Earlier, if the hero was paid Rs 1 lakh, the female lead would get half the amount. But now, things are changing.”

Then what are women interested in, ‘usually’? “I’ve noticed that women are more interested in who they’re working with. I was shocked to know that someone can only be interested in the co-actor, and not the script. Ask them why, and they say, it’s an A-list actor, and it’ll prove beneficial to their career. And I wonder, ‘Are you an actor or a fan? How can you care less about your character?’” But Kangna says she understands this, for, “This is what happens with beautiful women who’re not intelligent. And that’s how even men want them to be. An intelligent woman may pose a threat to their intellect, you see. It is so natural. If I were a man, even I’d marry a beautiful, dumb woman, lest she proves I’m less intelligent!”

Some believe there are no permanent friends in the film industry… “It’s such a terrible thing to say. How can one feel that? If a director offers a role to an actor, is he taking advantage of him? I believe he’s giving him work. But later, when the two can’t be in touch, will the actor say, ‘See, he’s not a friend anymore, for he doesn’t talk otherwise.’ People can’t be in touch always due to lack of time,” Kangna explains.

Before she set out to make it big in cinema, Kangna learnt theatre in Delhi. And coming to Delhi reminds her of those days. “I love Delhi winters. When I used to live here, I saw the pace of life, and it’s not as fast as Mumbai.” One day, her guru suggested she “become a film actor, than a theatre actor, if she wanted a decent life.” Kangna says she asked him, ‘Why not be a theatre artiste and still earn success?’ “He said, ‘That’s how it has been, and is,’” she recalls.

She created a buzz in Bollywood with her debut in Aashiq Banaya Aapne but Tanushree Dutta’s career soon fizzled out and the actress blames the judge mental nature of the film industry for it.

Tanushree Dutta who is back on the silver screen after a gap of almost two years with the horror flick Rokkk says that she was unduly stereotyped as mere eye candy who could do nothing but “hot and sultry” roles.

“The surprising part though is that even though I have worked in different genre of movies, I was slotted in a certain bracket. I was told that people expected me to be a hot and sultry woman in each of my films,” she told PTI.

But the 29-year-old former Miss India is excited about her new innings which promises to show her in a different light.

“I can see that today, there is a different perception about me in Bollywood. Yes, it has taken some time but I am happy that I am reaching there,” said Tanushree who is now looking forward to the release of her next film Apartment.

She was one of the hottest debutants in Bollywood circuits when she enjoyed a double bill in Aashiq Banaya Aapne and Chocolate which released within a fortnight of each other in 2005.

The Bengali beauty who is still remembered for a steamy love scene between her and Emraan Hashmi in Aashiq Banaya Aapne said that the audience will see her in a whole new avatar in Jagmohan Mundhra’s ‘Apartment’.

Say no to piracy: Bollywood and US body combined fight

Leading Bollywood studios have joined hands with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) to set up an anti-piracy coalition.

Announced here on the last day of the FICCI Frames entertainment convention, the coalition, which includes Bollywood studios such as Reliance Big Entertainment, Yash Raj Films, UTV Motion Pictures and Eros International, will target all forms of piracy, both physical and online, affecting India.

According to the US India Business Council/Ernst & Young 2008 report on “The Effects of Counterfeiting and Piracy on India’s Entertainment Industry,” the Indian film industry lost $959 million and 571,896 jobs due to piracy. KPMG has also placed the film piracy rate at 60%.

The Indian film industry loses around $1 billion to piracy, said MPAA chairman Dan Glickman.

Meanwhile, information & broadcasting minister Ambika Soni said that the budget proposal to levy service tax on the on the copyright of cinematography films and sound recordings is unfair and should not be implemented. “In 2013, the entertainment industry will celebrate 100 years of Indian Cinema and I do not want the film fraternity to be unhappy over the double taxation which cramps their possibility of making more cinema,” added Ambika Soni at the Ficci-Frames convention.

Dia Mirza says romantic roles can do wonders to one’s popularity index

Dia Mirza is on cloud nine. Not since her debut in the Madhavan and Saif-starrer Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein has the girl been given a sweet romantic role to act in. But with Hum Tum Aur Ghost (HTAG), she makes a return to her niche. “I genuinely feel I am most suited to playing affectionate, warm and lovable characters. Sometimes, in our bid to get out of our slot, we tend to steer clear of them. On hindsight, I feel a romantic film can do much more for you in the popularity index than anything else. But God’s timing is always right and here I am again,” she says happily.

Barring a few bright spots in her career, Dia has not had a great innings in the nine years she has spent in Bollywood, but she is optimistic about her next film with producer-actor Arshad Warsi. The film focusses on Armaan Suri, a professional photographer with a drinking problem but leading an otherwise perfect life. The twist in the tale is he begins to see and hear dead people. His perfect girlfriend (Dia) finds this difficult to digest and moves away. “The film is funny, mad and even dramatic in parts. As his girlfriend, I am quite concerned about what I think is hallucination. The film is very intelligently made and none of the characters are one-dimensional. Yet it is not complicated,” she adds.

HTAG took 45 days to shoot and was called Kaun Bola? earlier. It boasts impressive special effects by Red Chillies, and Dia says one of the main reasons why the post-production took an uncommonly long time was that Arshad was very particular about the effects in the film. “He said if you can make out that a particular scene is created with special effects, then it really has no impact!” she says.

Working with a friend
Arshad and Dia come together in this one after working in Rajkumar Hirani’s Lage Raho Munnabhai where they did not have a single interactive scene. “Lage Raho… was a different experience altogether. We were there as mere artistes working with Raju. But in HTAG, it was a more wholesome experience. Arshad knew the script like the back of his hand. He is also a very good friend so we were working together on every aspect of filmmaking and I got to learn a lot. As a producer, he is uncompromising and my respect for him and the process of making films has increased a thousand fold,” she says.

Asked to comment on the stories linking her up with Arshad (who is married to Maria Gorretti and has two children), she says, “I have reached a stage where the media has linked me to every actor and if this is part of a publicity ploy, then Arshad and I don’t agree with it. People who know us and even fans, who have a genuine perception of what kind of people we are, will not believe it. I don’t have to explain my relationship with Arshad to anyone because what I share with him is something intense. You don’t meet a lot of people with whom you can connect on the same basis as I do with Arshad. I know them (Arshad and Maria) for the past ten years and these two people have always believed in me and said that I have not been given my due. So, such stories don’t spoil my relationship, I am okay.”
