Synopsis Khatta Meetha Movie:
Struggling road construction contractor, Sachin Tichkule (Akshay Kumar) is doomed to Dream big. There is no chance in hell that his dreams will ever come true, simply because he has no money to bribe! To make Matters worse, the new municipal commissioner turns out to be his ex girl friend (Trisha) who now hates him.

Even as you laugh as Sachin bubbles his way from one disaster to another, the film reveals in a light hearted way, the extent of corruption and bribery rampant in the system, and the ingenious means you have to adopt if you want to survive enjoy the bumpy ride!

Katrina Kaif out of the bag

After much chasing and probing, actor Katrina Kaif, often talked about for her on and off relationship status with actor Salman Khan, breaks her silence and ends all speculation. “I am single till I’m not married. So, once I’m wedded, I’d cease to be single,” says Kaif, declining to get into the details.

The actor, who has spent six years in Bollywood, has so far, ensured that she keeps her personal life tucked away from the media that has been speculating about the status of her relationship with Khan, which reportedly hit rock bottom a few months ago.

Kaif’s admission of her single status could be attributed to Khan, who has also lately been talking about his single status in most of his interviews for promoting his forthcoming film Dabangg. During one of his interviews, Khan even looked into the camera and said, “I’m single. Katrina, are you listening?”

Kaif seemed prepared for questions on her relationship status, as she arrived at a city venue to announce her association with Etihad Airways on Tuesday. Her initial reply to the queries regarding her personal life is, “no comments.”

Too hard to handle
She, however, adds, “Sometimes it’s hard to make decisions, professional and personal. And if you have to make it in any form of public domain, I think that’s a little bit more than what I can handle. Which is why I have never commented on who I am with, whether there has been an argument, or if we’ve broken up.”

When asked if she had worked hard to keep her commitment, Kaif says, “If you commit to something, you must stand by it. But if you commit to something and the situation changes, then perhaps the commitment also changes.”

But Kaif categorically dismisses reports of her budding friendship with Ranbir Kapoor, acting as a catalyst in her split with Khan, as baseless rumours. Kaif retorts, “Salman has said he’s single. I’m saying I’m single. What else is left for me to say now?”

Item girl Rakhi Sawant claims she has been cheated in Bollywood and now wants to strengthen her foothold on the small screen.

“I don’t want to work on the big screen anymore. I don’t have the heart to work in Bollywood now… mere saath wahaan bahut cheating ho gayi (I have been cheated a lot there). I only want to work on television,” Rakhi said.

Rakhi, who has done bit roles in films like ” Main Hoon Naa” and “Dil Bole Hadippa” and item numbers such as “Dekhta hai tu kya”, has also done several reality shows like ” Nach Baliye”, “Rakhi Ka Swayamvar” and ” Pati, Patni Aur Woh”.

She says the end result of her role in Yash Raj Films’ “Dil Bole Hadippa” was disappointing.

“I gave my six months to ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’. But when the film released, my entire role was chopped off. So then I said namaskar (goodbye) to the big screen. I am very happy with my television work. What I have got from TV, I have never got from the big screen. But if I get good offers from Bollywood, I will still consider them,” she added.

The actress, who will soon be seen on Imagine TV’s new reality show ” Rakhi Ka Insaaf”, is also open to item numbers.

“I would always do item numbers. I don’t see any wrong in doing item numbers. Go to a discotheque and people are dancing for free, so why shouldn’t I do it on screen. God has given me this talent and I love dancing,” she said.

I haven’t replaced Arjun Rampal in Don 2: Kunal Kapoor

Bollywood hunk Kunal Kapoor is disappointed and upset. What seemed to be a replacement of model-turned-actor Arjun Rampal in much-awaited thriller Don 2 is “not true”, rues the former. Rumour mills were abuzz that Arjun’s character Jasjeet will be now played by the 34-year-old model-turned-actor Kunal, who has dismissed the reports.

“This is not true. I haven’t replaced Arjun in Don 2. It is very disappointing and upsetting,” said Kunal.

“His character doesn’t exist in the film and mine is a fresh character altogether,” he added.

Arjun reportedly moved out of the movie on financial grounds. The sequel retains the original cast that includes Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Boman Irani.

Kunal was in the capital as a showstopper for designer Manoviraj Khosla on the second day of the Van Heusen India Men’s Week (VHIMW) here Saturday. The three day gala goes on till Sunday.

He has also been learning to fly a single engine Cessna 172 at Sagar in Madhya Pradesh since the last two years. He is now “finally” waiting to get his licence.

“I am going there next month. I am still 20 hours away, so I’ll finish that and probably finally get my licence,” Kunal told IANS.

Last seen in Lamhaa, Kunal’s other future projects include Doga and Chamkila.

Manmohan Singh to watch Bollywood Movie Peepli Live

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will watch a special screening on Sunday of Bollywood actor and producer Aamir Khan’s much-talked about movie Peepli Live. “He will watch the movie tomorrow,” an official at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) told IANS on Saturday. The official said Aamir Khan will be present at the 7 Race Course Road residence of the prime minister for the screening.

Senior officials have also been invited for the movie, which deals with the issue of farmers’ suicides in a satirical manner.

Aamir Khan had earlier arranged similar screenings for Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray.

The movie that has been directed by Anusha Rizvi and produced by Aamir Khan has done astounding business in India - in its opening week itself - as it earned about Rs.24 crore. The movie was made on a budget of approximately Rs.10 crore.

My role’s more complex than Kajol: Kareena Kapoor

Bollywood star actress Kareena Kapoor feels she has managed to strike the right balance between commercial and meaningful cinema. Hailing from an illustrious film family, she says she can’t do films where she only has to dance around trees.

“I enjoy acting. Acting is in my blood, it is in my genes, it is in my DNA and you can see that on screen I like doing different roles. I can’t do just those films where I am looking pretty and sing and dance around trees. I want to act,” Kareena said.

The actress considers her debut film “Refugee” (2000) a special film. ” Refugee was a very special film because I always wanted to prove myself as an actress and not to be known just as a glam doll. There are films like ‘Refugee’, ‘Chameli’, ‘Omkara’, ‘Jab We Met’, ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Kurbaan’; they all have been very different. “I don’t think any other actress has been able to do such a variety of roles. So the journey, I think, has been colourful,” said Kareena, 29.

Nine years after “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” (2001), where she played Kajol’s younger sister, Kareena has teamed up with Kajol in Sidharth Malhotra’s directorial debut ” We Are Family”. She is elated to share the same frame with the senior actress.

“I think it’s an exciting challenge to be working with Kajol. In ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gaam’ we didn’t have too many scenes together, but in this film we are both in the same frame. We both live in the same house, have equally powerful roles; in fact, mine is the most complex and complicated part. It’s very easy to be emotional and gain sympathy but very difficult to win over the sympathy and I hope I could achieve that,” she said.

Releasing Sep 3, “We Are Family” is the Hindi adaptation of Hollywood hit ” Stepmom” (1998). Arjun Rampal plays what Ed Harris did in the original, while Kajol steps into Susan Sarandon’s shoes as as a divorced mother.

Kareena plays the same role that Julia Roberts did, but in her own style. “I am absolutely honoured that Karan ( producer Karan Johar) and Sidharth thought that I could do the Julia Roberts role because to me she is the finest actress,” said the actress who feels the adaptation could have been more contemporary. “It’s a very desi film. I think it should have been made more contemporary. Indian audiences are ready for that. It’s about the journey of two women. They start off with hating each other and due to unforeseen circumstances they end up loving each other.”

While working with Kajol, Kareena observed that her co-star was quite similar to her sister Karisma when it comes to their child. “Kajol is a hands-on mother. I have seen Karisma. Both Kajol and Karisma, I don’t know if it’s the trait of that generation, are just there with their children,” said Kareena.

Asked how it would have been if Karisma had played Kajol’s role, she quipped, “Oh god! She can’t do that because we can’t marry the same man. No way.” There are three child stars - Aanchal Munjal, Nominath Ginsburg and Diya Sonecha - in the film, but Kareena didn’t have to handle them. She is all praise for their professional behaviour on the sets though.

“In the film, I didn’t have to be with the kids because they had their mother (Kajol). The children were really lovely, they didn’t get impatient. They were acting like adults, not like children,” said Kareena.

Aashayein - Return to form - Review

Twenty minutes into Aashayein, you find yourself in a depressing place where the terminally ill come to die. And the gloom of death is visible on every face around and Kukunoor takes his own time to let the protagonist get used to it with repeated shots of him smoking, feeling his rib cage, coughing and throwing up blood.

And you can’t help but think that Kukunoor maybe getting a tad too manipulative this time around. The setting is almost like a horror film… a bunch of characters all destined to die around one roof are probably going to get bumped off one by one just as we have invested in them.

But thankfully, Kukunoor chooses to focus on the bond between the 17-year-old drama queen Padma (Anaitha Nair) and the chain smoker coming to terms with his death Rahul (John Abraham) and we see sunshine and smiles again.

Just like he infused the Behroopiya (Shreyas Talpade) into Dor for comic relief in the middle of a heavy-duty drama, here he writes in the spirited Padma to change the mood and lighten things around. And it works.

Again, it’s Kukunoor’s disregard for genre that keeps a fairly predictable plot throw up a few surprises. Like how he turned a documentary on prison life into a thriller halfway in Teen Deewarein, here he sneaks in a bit of the supernatural (Ashwin Chitale, the kid from Shwaas gets to play a character that could have very well been in a Manoj Night Shyamalan film) to find metaphors from pop culture. A nice touch but spelt out way too much in the film.

He remains a fanboy, continuing to pay long-drawn tributes to films that inspired him. There are occasional digs at the filmi and the larger than life, something he’s been doing since Hyderabad Blues. And he knows to contrast the larger than life with what’s real… something he did so well in Bollywood Calling.

Which is why it is a little disturbing when he gets into Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s territory of manipulative melodrama… There’s an almost Black moment (remember Rani Mukerji pleading with Amitabh Bachchan for a kiss) here when the 17-year-old asks him to make love to her. Though Anaitha is simply terrific and owns the scene and maybe even the film here (to the point of making you cry), you tend to wonder et tu Kukunoor?

Kukunoor was the man who stood for anti-cinema, the filmmaker who made sure his characters always kept it real and celebrated life. To see him do what we have come to expect from Bhansali or even Karan Johar maybe a little unsettling for a Kukunoor fan, but it must be said here that he can make you cry as well as they can. And boy, he can make even John Abraham act.

Thankfully, the best things about Kukunoor’s brand of cinema are the little moments he creates out of life, the kinds you don’t get to see in the mainstream… Be it a nun asking for vodka shot or the irreverence to make Darth Vader jokes out of a patient who has lost his voice.

Welcome back, Nagesh Kukunoor. Aashayein is a tad too overdone, a little undercooked (some of the subplots involving other patients are hurriedly resolved or left hanging) and manipulative at times but hey, it has its heart in the right place.

For a film about death, Aashayein has enough life and hope to keep it going.
